When they aren't renewing their subscriptions, you have to renew their interest.

You're deep into your renewal series. There's a chunk of subscribers you've yet to convert. You dangled a special offer in front of them but they didn't bite. You tried to create a sense of urgency but they ignored it. Now what?

Don't panic. You've still got a powerful card to play: the reasons they subscribed to your magazine in the first place. It's time to re-ignite their interest, tout the value of their subscription, let them know what they'll be missing if they let it lapse.

The following renewal effort we created for New York Magazine accomplishes this in both subtle and not-so-subtle ways. It foremost reestablishes the worth of the publication to the subscriber, extols its many benefits and reinforces them in the body of the letter. Then uses a special offer to clinch the deal. A potent mix.

A renewal series should be more than a litany of generic clones that say the same thing over and over. Each effort is an opportunity to entice the recipient in an engaging new way, to try different tactics to discover what will trigger the highest response. Test, test and test some more. The payoff can be enormous.
